Ballarat will come to life with a whole load of activities and events to keep the family entertained as part of the Ballarat Winter Festival. So make sure to set aside a few days to enjoy all the wonder and warmth that the city's attractions have to offer!

Evening

Check-in to one of Ballarat’s luxurious accommodation providers or self-contained apartments. Lake Wendouree Luxury Apartments will provide you and the family with all you need and more, nestled metres’ away from the iconic lake and gardens precinct in the heart of Ballarat.

If you're planning to visit as a large family group, then the newly-renovated Coach House is a great option. This guest house combines history with contemporary, boasting light-filled spaces of elegance, charm and luxury, and sleeping up to nine guests!

Morning

Settle in to one of our prized cafes for a hearty brunch. The Hydrant Food Hall is perfect for the children, with a dedicated cubby nook and blackboard, and the Seven Seeds coffee and delectable menu is sure to appease.

Afternoon

Sovereign Hill will once again host its magical Christmas in July: Winter Wonderlights activities during the Winter Festival. By day, stroll down the Main Street and relish in the smell of Christmas spices and faux snow falling at regular intervals as you take-in all the wonder and delight that this award-winning outdoor museum offers. Indulge in a bag of iconic Raspberry Drops, test your luck gold panning, or partake of the glorious pastries at the New York Bakery. By night, watch the mystical Winter Wonderlights as they whisk you to an alternate world with yuletide-themed projections, sound, light, music and more snow! An event not to be missed.

Morning

Take a drive to the Ballarat Wildlife Park and get up-close-and-personal with the newly-welcomed meerkat family as well as the little penguins, cuddly koalas, cute kangaroos and (not-so-cute) crocs.

Noon

Local eateries will serve up their very own warming pies during winter as part of the Ballarat Pie Competition, so make sure to check out the participating operators and indulge in some beautiful pastries during your stay.

Afternoon

The Art Gallery of Ballarat - Australia's oldest and largest regional art gallery - is a beautiful historic space and one of the city's must-see attractions. Many of the gallery's works feature questions especially-tailored towards children, offering an engaging and immersive experience for the whole family. The gallery will also be hosting the French exhibition Into Light during the Winter Festival, giving audiences the exclusive chance to view some outstanding 19th- and 20th-century impressionist artworks from the Musée de la Chartreuse in northern France. Showcasing pieces reflecting the romantic seascapes and tranquil landscapes of northern France through to paintings celebrating pure light, colour and the lives of ordinary people, this show will have you yearning for a Parisian life of calm, culture and delight.

Evening

Gaze out into the wintry skies and admire the workings of the universe as part of the Ballarat Observatory's Stunning Starry Winter Nights event. Jupiter and Saturn are in the evening sky, and the centre of our Milky Way galaxy is overhead, offering the perfect backdrop for an evening of astronomical wonders.

Morning

Rally the kids together and take to real ice in the heart of Ballarat at the pop-up ice-skating rink. Lace up your skates and glide (or trample) around in your skating best. And if you're a beginner, fear not, you can always hang on to the rink for dear life!

Afternoon

Your Ballarat adventure is coming to an end, but on your way out make sure to check-in to one of Australia’s only medieval theme parks Kryal Castle. Almost 40 years old, the attraction features everything from a Knights’ Round Table to a torture dungeon and museum. During winter, make sure to back the right horse (and knight) as you witness the fiery jousting clash in the Main Arena!
